Audi Repair: Engine Repair costs, rubber belt, timing belt

Question
I was intrigued when you said a engine replacement could be had for $2,500.  I just spent $2,500 to replace timing belt+ on my 2002 A4 (60,000miles).  For a bit more would I have been better off to get a rebuilt/replacement engine?

Answer
Yes I can obtain an engine for $2500.  That is exclusive of fitting, so no labor charges included at all.  You, my friend, just paid $35 for a rubber belt, about $65 for a water pump, possibly $25 for an idler pulley or two, and the remainder for LABOR CHARGES...  That's why I do mine myself.
