Audi Repair: 1999 a6 2.8 quattro usa, shock absorber, pollen filter

Question
Hello, when i drive over a bump or hit a pothole, it sounds like a clanking or mateal clinging from the passenger side of the car. What could that be from and is it a costly repair?

Answer
Hi there,

well there could be a few possibilities actually, start with a visual inspection, make sure every thing is tight, then carry out a spanner check, re tighten all the bolts including the top shock mounts that are accessible from the engine compartment( one is hidden in the phlenum chamber in front of the pollen filter)

If the visual inspection does not turn up anything, then the problem is either a top shock mounting or a leaking shock absorber. the job is relatively easy to do provided you follow a systematic process, keep note of the fitting order and locations of all the parts and you have access to a spring compressor which is needed to compress the spring to dismantle the shock absorber assembly.

Also great caution is needed when carrying out the job as the spring will be under great tension and can cause serious or fatal injury if it slips.

the cost depends on what is actually faulty which will be established after the assembly is dismantled for a visual inspection.
