Audi Repair: Audi A6 1996, forward gears, red herring

Question
On a very wet day this week I pulled up to a stop light, stopped and when I depressed the gas pedal, car stalled.  The car would start but at forward gears buck and stall but reverse worked.  We towed it to the garage and at first we thought it was the  transmission, then there were abs codes.  The tach quits, oil light and battery come on as well.  Another fact, although maybe red herring, I had just hit the defroster(and therefore the a/c) at the stop light.
My mechanic swapped out for another module and that's not it.  Today, the car was running fine for him when it heated up but crashed again when the storm front rolled through this afternoon.  Then, he discovered seeds and nuts stuffed in the molding, I'm thinking a mouse as moved into the garage and into my car when its parked there overnight.  Sounds like a short to me in the wiring, maybe age related, maybe rodent snack (and we know who's setting traps in the garage this weekend!).
Are these items interrelated in the wiring harness, where should we be focusing?  What's maddening is that when the car heats up in the garage, the problem goes away, so we have a limited window to search.
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
This sounds like an interesting chase, with a time limit because of temperature changes!  It may be worth reading out the codes when it is cold.  However it sounds like you are losing contact when the temperature goes down, so perhaps a loose contact or maybe a malfunctioning relay.  Rodents typically don't like modern wiring, so you should be OK there, but they sometimes take a liking to the rubber boots over some connectors.  Check that they have not put a bunch of stuff in the air filter.  Let me know how you get on,  Jan
