Audi Repair: 2003 A4 1.8T Cab Trans Shifting Stutter, throttle position sensor, mass airflow sensor

Question
QUESTION: I seem to have a shifting problem with my '03 A4 Cab.  It has a stutter when it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd as well.  I was told it was a software issue, however being a Computer Engineer, I have a hard time believing that.  Is this a know issue in the CVT?  If so - what is the fix and relative cost.  Thanks.

ANSWER: The transmission is indeed controlled by the engine management system, and it has a bunch of internal switch solenoids.  These solenoids are connected through a ribbon cable, and these ribbon cables are susceptible to failure.  However the stutter you describe could also be an engine issue; possibly the mass airflow sensor or throttle position sensor.  I would get the codes read out from the engine and the transmission and go from there.  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: The dealership just called and said it was a Transmission Issue and I need a new one.  $7970 with labor.

Does this seem reasonable for a vehicle with 59,000 miles on it.  This is REDICULOUS!

Lisa

Answer
No that is absolutely not reasonable.  I would contact Audi, since I believe somewhere, somehow, there is a 100,000 mile drivertrain warranty out there.  See what you can get out of Audi USA, since the dealer just seems to be after your wallet...  Let me know,  Jan
