Audi Repair: 2000 audi a4 2.8 quattro, wheel bearing, brake caliper

Question
QUESTION: i have a 2000 audi a4 2.8 quattro,  i just purchased the vehicle and noticed that there is a wheel bearing type noise when i am driving. the noise can only be heard when i am turnign the sttering wheel to the left and some times to the right.I dont know if it is the front or rear wheel bearing that is making the nosie.

ANSWER: This is very difficult to diagnose without hearing it.  This could be a differential, a wheel bearing or even a transmission.  I would try to establish when the noise is the loudest, also it is useful to grab the wheel and see if there is any play or noise when you jack the car up and spin the wheel.  Let me know what you find,  Jan

QUESTION: Ok i had the car jacked up yesterday and spun the wheel and did not hear any noise I inspected the whole front front right wheel assembly and did not notice anything unusual.

ANSWER: Did you also try to pivot the wheel and feel for play?  An alternative is that perhaps a stone has become lodged in the brake caliper which is making a grinding sound.  Did you check both sides?  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: I also have taken the calipers apart and inspect it and also took the rotor off to inspect the assembly and did not see anything unsuall.I can almost a grinding type noise when i drive the vehicle around 5mph.

Answer
This sounds strange.  Is the noise definitely coming from the front?  Not something silly like an inner plastic fender rubbing or the undertray catching on something...  No noise when you spin the wheels while the car is jacked up, right?  Let me know,  Jan
