Audi Repair: Audi A3 tdi Temp Guage problem, audi a3 tdi, coolant temperature sensor

Question
QUESTION: The engine temperature gauge on my 02 Audi a3 tdi (130bhp) has started to show about 110 degrees, but I have noticed when you switch the ignition on when the car is stone cold the gauge reads about 80, should I be worried?

ANSWER: The coolant temperature sensor is a fairly high failure item.  I would say that this sensor would be the first thing to check.  Let me know,  Jan

QUESTION: Thanks Jan, have you any idea where the sensor is located on the engine? Is it easy to replace?

Answer
Don't have many A3 diesels in the US, but typically these sensors are on or near the cylinder head.  A friendly mechnica will show you, replace the sensor with the engine cold, you will lose a little coolant typically... depending on how quick you work.  let me know,  Jan
