Audi Repair: 99 Audi a4 ac fan on fire, audi a4, fan motor

I recently took my car in for an oil change. They called me back and said when they pulled it into the garage my AC fan was on fire(8 inch flames). They didn't know why but gave me a quote on a new fan. Do you know what could have caused this? (the engine was cold) I am also low on coolant and may have a leak. It is a 99 quattro with a turbo.

The AC fan is electrical, so perhaps there was a short in there.  Perhaps it was seized.  The coolant issue seems unrelated unless it poured over the fan motor, however even then it should not burst into flames...!  Are the fuses for this fan the correct value?  Let me know what you find,  Jan
