Jeep Repair: 97 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 4.0L, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

Question
I have many questions and I will be thankful for all the insight you can pass along.
I have these two problems that happen at the same time - my speedometer/tachometer needle goes to 'zero' and my airbag light comes on.  The odometer doesn't seem to be affected.  I hit a bump in the road, all goes back to normal.  I hit another bump and things are higgly-wiggly again.  It will happen with cruise control on, but there is no way I can tell if it is affecting my speed.  I seemed to be flowing along with traffic.  This has been a intermittent problem and as I am cruising along at 65 mph on the freeway, should I be worrying about the airbags deploying or losing all speed if this problem gets worse?

Have you heard of anyone having both problems occurring simultaneously?

I plan to be taking it to the dealer, what should they be looking for since the problem is intermittent?

I did call them up and ask about the 2000 airbag control module recall and the dealer looked up my Jeep's PIN and said the database showed it was replaced in 2002.  I bought my Jeep (used) in 2005. Could there still be an issue with the parts?

Does the check engine light need to go on to show for an airbag control code issue or is it a different code system?

I am curious to know if there is an airbag shut-off switch on the 97 Jeep Cherokee. If so, where is it located and what does it look like? (I have been thumbing through Haynes and don't seem to find anything on one.)

And last, I have had a torque converter clutch solenoid replacement twice in the last year, which is somewhat baffling, even to the tech.  The tech did not report any excessive wear or other transmission concerns.  The symptoms I dealt with were the check engine light going on and I had performance issues (off and on sluggishness) that would make one think it was a fuel line or pump issue - if they didn't know the code.  Have you heard of this being a regular problem for the Jeep Cherokee?  Anything I should watch for in the future?

Thanks for your time!

Answer
Sounds like you have a loose connection behind the dash or at the computer, but most likely behind the dash.  The engine light only gives codes for the engine and transmission.  I don't believe there is an air bag shut off, unless there is one on the dash you turn off with the key.  You could pull the air bag fuse, but I would not recommend it.  I cant really tell you anything about the torque solenoid.  I am not sure about the sluggish problem, I would have to take it on a test drive and see the codes.  Hope I could help you some, and hope you get it all worked out.
