Audi Repair: 02 audi a4 1.8t FWD cvt electrical problems, accurse, temp gauge

Question
Hello, I have a 2002 Audi a4 1.8t FWD witch cvt trans. My problem im having is that the gear position indicator on the dashboard (PNRD) does not show what the trans position is other then when in Park P is indicated. If I put the car in reverse it will not work. Also the manual gear shift 1 to 6 does not work. It just stays in drive but its not shown. The car drives forward fine but does not show it is in D on the dash. This problem accurse after the car heats up to normal running temp from a cold start or if the car was off between 2 or more hours and still has heat showing on the temp gauge. If it still has heat it will not work until normal running temp is achieved and running for about 10 to 15min it will start working fine. Fine meaning the Indicator shows what position. Reverse works normally, and so does the autostick. If the car is havingthe problem and I shift it from P to R then to neutral and back to Reverse it goes in failsafe mode and (PRND) are blinking on dash. Once this happens the car can go in reverse and you can switch to manual shift and it works. I hope i haven't confused you to much. The Check engine light is not on but i did get a trouble code 17090 - Transmission Range Sensor. The car has 50,386 miles and the problem started around 49,200. The mechanic that gave me the trouble code said it could be a number of things but he is not sure what. He said it might even be the TCM which will cost me 1,500. He said it is definitely something electrical. Do you think you can help me out with this in anyway? I would really appreciate your advice or how to fix help before i go spending 1,500 or more. Thanks

Answer
hello
With this fault , we, at the dealer are replacing TCM and fluid, because TCM is inside trans.
This is the firs step that Audi whants us to do. So far only few needed whole trans, in 95 % tcm will fix all the problems.
I do not know where you live , but in US they cover up to 50K. If you live in US , go to the dealer and try to get it cover, most of the time they will help you in some way and it will be in history, so if any problem after they will know what to do .
good luck               pltech

hello.
I got this mail from other person, please help him out ...

Greg,

I have the identical problem on my 2003 A4 to the one you answered here http://en.allexperts.com/q/Audi-Repair-1811/02-audi-a4-1.htm  Can you provide my e-mail to the originator and ask if he or she'd be willing to contact me?  I'd like to find out if replacing the TCM fixes their problem.  My e-mail is trantham@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance.
