Auto Airbag System Repair: Air bag/seat belt, code charts, airbag system

Question
QUESTION: My "service air bag" mesage is on and the air bag light is on.  I was told by a service shop that this is a common problem with the seat belt???  I took it to a dealer and was told that the air bag module, which tells the air bag that the seat belt is engaged, was damaged by my carrying stuff between the seat and the console which broke the module.  Can this happen?
Thank You

I need to know what year, make & model vehicle you have before I can help you.  Additionally, if you have the receipt with the information form the dealer, try and determine what the fault code is (from the invoice).  With that information I may be able to shed some more light on this topic for you.

Alternately, check out this website...it's my company & you don;t have to buy anything to get a lot of information (unlesss you want to).  Explore the site as there are over 100 web pages throughout the resource and "free" information pages

The purpose of this website and company is to help people diagnose and repair airbag problems themselves without taking them to the dealer (if possible).   It offers all the photos and data you need to understand your airbag system, read the codes and reset the light.  It’s a pay site, but it certainly is worth the money ($14.95 for 1 day full access)
There’s a place to check if your car is listed on the home page

This is quite a complete website with pictures, descriptions and factory fault code charts as well as a working demo that shows just how easy these repairs can be.  Although it does not give step by step instructions, there is enough information in the pictures and the "how-to" pages that most people can do it themselves.
Lots of insurance companies and body shops use this site for the information they need to repair your car.
Lastly, there's a page in this site that tells you which cars need a scan tool and which ones can be done without one

QUESTION: It is a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe.  I've looked between the driver seat and the console and cannot find any connector that could be broken by putting anything here.  I carry a nightstick there, but it just lays there.  The only numbers I could find are 5032 CINS and BOO79-06.  I hope this helps.

Thank You

Thanks David:

That info helps a lot!!
Here's the code interpretation for your diagnosis:

B0079 06 ---Driver Seat Position Sensor Circuit Short to Ground or Open Circuit
It's not for the seat belt, but for the seat position sensor.

On the seat track, there is a sensor that determines the position of the driver seat.  That sensor tells the airbag computer how to deploy the driver airbag in case of an accident (high volume pressure or low volume pressure, depending on how close you are to the steering wheel).

The wires that go to that sensor are under the driver seat, not between the console and seat, however the sensor is mounted to the seat track.  The circuit affecting the reading of that sensor has been damaged, either an open circuit (broken wire or bad sensor) or shorted to ground (cut and touching the metal frame or a bad sensor).  In ether case, that sensor or wire harness needs to be examined or replaced
Although this is not a common problem on GM vehicles, we see it a LOT ion Hyundai cars.

Good luck
