Auto Airbag System Repair: 1999 Toyota Corolla airbags, toyota corolla, code charts

Question
Hi Doug, my question is similar to others you've answered, but with differences. Since my '99 Corolla had a fender bender recently, the airbag light is illuminated whenever the car is running, not just for 6 seconds or so at start-up. I assume this means the airbag is no longer working, is that correct? Second question:  can you speculate on likely causes, i.e., how likely it will represent a major repair/replacement?  Mostly if there's anything a novice such as myself can do to assess the situation, and thus be forearmed before facing shady dealership behaviors.
Thanks.
Ken

Answer
Hi Ken:

When the light is on, the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.

The illuminated light on your car is telling there is a problem.  Your vehicle will not require a scan tool for the diagnosis.  Here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system.   Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself.  There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.
www.Airbagsolutions.com has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong!  Although it’s a pay site ($14.95/day), it’s a lot cheaper than going to the dealer.

I hope this helps
Good luck
Doug
