Auto Electronics: Power door locks inoperative on one side of car, noid light, side locks

Question
Hi,
I have a 1989 Eagle Premier, and the power door locks on just the drivers side of the car aren't working. If I use the locking switch on the drivers or passenger side, then the locks in the front and the back of the passenger side work, but there isnt even a sound from the actuators trying to work on the front or back of the drivers side locks. The doors themselves lock if you manually lock them. I've checked my shop manual and couldn't find anything addressing this problem. Any suggestions on how to fix it? Or at least where to start?
Thanks

Answer
Dan,

Wow, I have not seen an Eagle Premier in quite a while.  I think our Canadian winters looked after pretty much all of the ones that were imported up here.  The Eagle was a joint effort from Renault and AMC before they packed it in.

That system has a door lock relay that receives input from both switches left and right.  It is on the passengers kick panel and probably the most convenient place to do localized testing but if the right side of the car is working the relay will be ok as it controls all four motors at the same time.  I would probably pull the door panel off and check the solenoids themselves and work back from there.  Every solenoid has a brn and lt green wire that goes to it.  If you unplug it and insert a bulb or a noid light (providing you don't have a meter) it should light up when you hit the unlock lock buttons.  Be sure to check the harness that goes through the door pillar as it is a high wear point for older cars.  you can peel back the insulation and look for cracked wires.  They will literally crack right in half from bending over and over again over the last 23 years!
If both quit at the same time I would suspect the splice in the right kick panel where they split off from the relay to the four doors.  It may have gotten corroded over the years.
