Answer
Hi,

First, you don't give me the year make and model. Without that information no answer can be derived.'
Assuming the vehicle is a GM and newer than 1981, the first thing you would do is go into the glove box and review the owners manual as for the location of the cruise fuse and check to confirm it is good.

The reason I used the baseline of 1981 is that is when GM started using computers in their vehicles. The cruise is tied into the computer.  One can attempt to go on the internet assuming there is a simple standard answer to repair the cuise, but other than a blown fuse there is no simple answer. You are dealing with merely the symptom that the cruise does not work. The cause at this time is undetermined.
There can be close to 100 different causes. A defective brake switch, a computer, a servo, a wiring issue, the lever or wiper switch and the list goes on.
I advise my readers that the cheapest and best diagnostic tool is a factory service manual explicitly for that exact vehicle. The diagnostic flow charts are easy for just about anyone to understand. This prevents wAsting money changing parts on a guess.
The year of the vehicle is important because some manuals can be downloaded for a year for about $30 at http://www.alldata.com, while others only come in hard copy and found for around $100 on EBay or Craig's. The manual can be used time and time again for any future problems as well.
You do not have to be a highly trained technician to use it. In fact, it would not hurt if the highly trained dealer techs used the manuals instead of changing parts on a guess emptying the customers wallet and not fixing the car .

Good luck!
