You did not state the year, make model. The Mass Air Flow sensor controls performance but if you are dealing with a pre 1994 vehicle an initial diagnoses is spotty and has to be questioned because the sensor you refer to could not even be your problem. Why do you think the MAF is bad?

Poor running, check engine or service engine soon light coming on, however this can be a symptom for anything related to the computer system. The only way to know for you to know for sure is to have the computer scanned with a Tech II or equivalent. Many of the larger service facilities have this equipment so you don't have to go to a dealer.

To ask as to the characteristics of a bad sensor cannot give you the answer you need because something in front of that sensor can be the problem as well.
