Question
I recently had the check engine light and alarm come on when I was driving.  I checked the oil and it was fine. There was no overheating or engine noise. Had someone look at car the oil light was out. Drove for next couple of days no oil light on.  Took it to local garage they checked out found nothing.  Had oil changed they did say that there is a leak in the value cover but it is not bad since I do not see any under the car.  Now today the light came on. Question is It seems like a sensor can the dealer check this out without the light being on?  Any suggestions of possible cause or if there is a serious threat to the operation of the car.  thank you.  Tom

Answer
Hello,

I am somewhat confused here. When you say Check engine, that is a yellow light hat tells you something is wrong with the emissions system and the computer system has to be tested.

Then you state the oil light comes on. Are these two separate issues? Which alarm are you referring to? Warning oil pressure is low? I wasn't aware that there was an alarm for that. Some engines have a fuel shut off will keep the engine from being damaged.

Lets assume for conversation sake it is the oil light. Level has nothing to do with the light going on. Its oil pressure that is the problem. The bad thing is that by the time the light comes on (about 4 pounds) damage is already being done. On a warm engine you should have 10-20 pounds at idle in drive.

When you said the engine was checked at the garage, what did they do? Did they put an oil pressure gauge on it to tell you how many pounds you had? That is the only way to diagnose an oil pressure issue.

Here comes the bad part--diagnosing why it has low oil pressure. This could be caused by a bad oil pump, worn cam bearings, rod bearings, main bearings? Before I would guess on some sort of sensor that won't fix it, you need it confirmed if you have good oil pressure or if the bottom end of the engine is worn out. There are temporary ways you can try to hide this problem good enough to sell, by putting 30w-50w oil in it, or you could try a high volume oil pump. If you do have an oil pressure issue, the choice will be looking at thousands of dollars to repair or letting someone else get the problem.

These things do happen no matter how well the car is taken care of.

Let me know what you find out. Do not drive with the oil light on!

Good Luck
