Answer
Hello,

From your description, It sounds like a broken rack or as cops called it when laying on the floor from a theft, the "D" ring.

In this Saginaw steering column, it would take a kid 30 seconds to defeat the locking mechanisms in this column with a screwdriver on the left side of the seeing column, completely opposite of the ignition lock. A finely built steering column GM used for 30 years and I made lots of money rebuilding them from theft.

The steering column has to be taken apart requiring special tools and knowledge. I still rebuild them. If you never took one of these columns apart, you don't want to.

The rack is on the left side of the column. When you rotate the ignition lock, it pulls on the rack, which pulls on the ignition actuator rod connected to your electrical ignition switch at the bottom of the column and the engine starts.

My number is 866-490-1673 if you think about sending the column to me. Its not real common for the rack to break, but it does happen. What is very common is when people grab the steering column to get in and out, the steering column gets loose. I have rebuilt thousands of these steering columns.

You don't want to go junk yard because of the VATS (that ugly chip in the key)
