Cadillac Repair: generator light on dash board comes on, New orleans auto theft SIU investigation/denial expert

Question
When the car engine gets hot from a long drive and I stop at a stop light the generator light on the dash board comes on dim and when I step on the gas the generator light goes more bright. This has already burned out the module under the distributor cap. I put a new module in and when the engine is cold the light does not come on. Could the coil be no good? This is an electrical problem. Can you help? 1980 Cadillac deville 368ci 6 liter
Thanks
Alex

Answer
Hello,

Put a multi meter to the battery cables while engine is running. You should see 13.2 volts. If you see less, alternator is a problem.

Listen for the scream of the alternator. If you turn the headlights on, you will hear it if it is charging.

I do not know the amp rating of the alternator and you would need to know it. You could call around for a replacement alternator and they could give you an idea. If you turn on all the accessories, on the amp scale of the meter, you should be pushing close to max and then the alternator should catch up in which the battery is charging.
The distributor components have nothing to do with the alternator.

Good luck!
