Cadillac Repair: diagnostic codes and stalling problem, New Orleans forensic locksmith, State Farm auto theft claim denial

Question
I have a 1991 Cadillac Brougham with 5.0 ltr engine, about 110,000 miles (it is rear wheel drive).
It starts and runs well, but after about 20 minutes city driving, it stalls at speed....then, while coasting, it will do a hard restart and go about 60 seconds and then stall again...repeating this process til i get to a nearby destination. It never stalls or runs poorly when the engine is 'cold' or not fully warmed up. Using the climate control to retrieve trouble codes, i got a code 48 and a code 132. I replaced the fuel and air filters and pcv valve. At about 90,000 miles the fuel pump assembly was replaced. I am not sure if I am correctly retrieving the codes, but i believe the code 48 refers to EGR issues and code 132 refers to the knock sensor (per Auto Zone). I am hoping to do a self-repair. Thanks much for any assistance

Answer
Hello,

I understand with today's economy that people are are trying to fix their own cars, but in your situation, you are dealing with a computer system that is only giving you very general diagnostic codes. Your code 48 EGR code is just giving athe person a general plce to look. Your car has a very primitive computer diagnostic system and it wasn't until 1994 GM went with the standard that is being used currently today on all vehicles.

If you just start changing sensors (auto zone does not mind selling you the parts), you may never get to the root problems setting off the codes and causing the computer not to run in full loop, causing your running issues.
To diagnose, a factory Cadillac manual is needed so that you can follow the diagnostic flow charts, to find out exactly what is setting these codes and giving you the issues.

Otherwise, you will just be wasting time and money and not getting the results you hope for.

Good Luck!
