Cadillac Repair: 1997 Eldorado, Rob Painter, robert Mangine

Question
Hi Rob, I am at my witts end. I am a 51 yr old disabled male living on a very tight budget and need some advice. The subject is a 1997 Cadillac Eldorado vin# 1G6ET1290VU606920 which I am the registered owner, the wires to the lock cylinder broke so I preformed the resistor trick, the motor starts for 2-3 seconds then shuts off (no fuel injector signal) I guess. I have soldered together a 50hz pulse modulator but do not have a clue where to connect the signal wire BCM, PCM ?Which wire and what color? Please help this is my only car and My wife and I am stranded. Please email

Answer
Hello,

Well, I too am a disabled male at 60 years old,so i can relate to the fixed income issue.
I do not care if you are the registered owner. Its not like it is illegal to tell someone how to steal a car, and its not like this system prevents theft in a 15 year old car with 1986 electronic technology. It just strands owners not thieves!

You need to understand this VATS junk. You may have something else going on,but it is not the VATS.

Yes,the theory is that the pulse is blocked for the injectors when VATS is enabled, but the starter is also locked out. In other words, your problem is not directly tied to the VATS and your pulse modulator is most likely not going to be the answer to  your problem..GM designed this system, in which after 1992, 14 different resistors were used. That ugly black thing on your ignition  key is only a resistor, which completes the circuit for a very thin wire running up the column, and another very thin wire running down the steering column to the VATS module, which then goes to the computer saying the correct resistance key is being used.

Simply put, if the starter cranked and the engine ran for only a few seconds, you problem IS NOT a VATS issue

These systems were notorious for those very thin wires breaking inside the insulation. An ohm meter was used to detect an open in the circuit, but any movement of the wires like tilting the column would put them back together for an intermittent start.

The reason your resistor trick did not work, is because something else is going on.

As for what location you install the pulse module, I have no clue.

Unfortunately, the only way you are going to fix your problem is with a Cadillac factory service manual, in which you can use diagnostic flow charts to find your problem. Your local library may have one, or you may be forced to purchase on Craigs list or EBAY. Otherwise you are not going to get root of the cause. Let's say you find out where to hook up this pulse modulator. What do you do when that doesn't work, just like the bypass of the resistor?

I understand the financial issue, however this can be a rabbit hole that will cost you even more time, frustration and money! I am trying to make you cut to the chase.

Good luck!
