Question
I;m looking at a caddy and you can leave it idle and temp is fine but you drive it and than it overheats any ideas it does have a northstar eng.

Answer
Hello,

You say you are looking at this Cadillac. Are you buying it? Don't!
Aluminum engine, that you won't find a junk yard engine that has not been overheated. Catastrophic engine failure is imminent! Water pumps, radiator, heater core, plugged water jackets, just to name a few of the issues that cause over heating problems on these engines.
Even if you had a thermostat issue, which it never is, collateral damage is head gaskets, cracked block and more. Stay away!!!!!
Aluminum engines self destruct from overheating and all Cadillac V-8s from 1982 are notorious for these issues, including the northstar. $4K plus will get you a new GM crate engine and overheating issue may still not be fixed!
If you look at my archives for Cadillac engine overheating over the years, this is a problem you don't even want to touch.
