Question
I asked about my car earlier and I was rushing what I wanted to say because I am at work and made it to confusing. Forget everything I said about all the work I had done on my car. That was from last year. I only said all that because I have put alot of money into the car and am scared now that I am having trouble with it for the last two days that I might get scammed into paying for alot more work to be done when it may be something simple. It is true the wheel does not lock.I do just have to put some muscle into turning the wheel to get it to the side of the road and out of the way of traffic. The last two days the car just shuts off while driving. I see the battery light come on and the car turns off. It will let me turn the car back on and continue driving.I did check the battery and it is fine. So I wonder why the car would turn off.Nothing seems wrong with the car other then it turning off and the rpm seeming to jump. I feel the car jumping forward.

Answer
Hello,

Now we are getting somewhere. What you refer to as jumping forward is known as lurching which could be from the battery light cause. I don't know how you checked the battery, but the great knowers of all (GM engineers) commonly installed tell tail lights of confusion. Check engine does not mean to check to see if the engine is present, but any number of emissions problems. The same holds true for the battery light. It does not mean there is a problem with the battery, but it tells you something is wrong with the charging system which could also give you the lurching and stalling because the computer needs a constant 10 volts to operate.

If this is a intermittent charging problem, you have a loose connection somewhere in the charging system. Could be as simple as a loose power wire going to the alternator. Alternators rarely fail intermittently, so if this problem is at times, there may be a loose wire.

It does not take long for the battery to go down if you are running other accessories like the radio, heater/air conditioning, wipers etc.

Your complaint could relate to the lurching when the battery charge gets too low for the computer to operate efficiently.

Have all the connections for the alternator checked out. You need to have this done by a professional. Also have the serpentine drive belt checked. This too could cause momentary charging system failure.

See, I ask the questions I do to draw out what is actually going on.

Let me know what is found.
