Question
QUESTION: i have a 94 cadi seville sts.i just bought it 1 week ago. my question is why wont my car shift out of 2nd gear. when i first start the car and put it in to drive it makes a real quick buzz sound, i heard it could be putting its self in fail safe mode, not sure what it is, but i feel it in the break peddle, then its stuck in 2nd. i heard it was the 1-2 shift silinoid so i had it replaced and prob is still there when i had the sili. replaced they told me that there was a couple picese of white plastic in the tranny pan. dont know what they could be. the car only has 80,000 miles on it and runs real strong i hope its some thing small like maybe the trans brain is unplugged. PLEASE HELP I cant affored to keep replaceing the wrong part and the WIFE is gettin pissed. Lol THANK YOU very much.

ANSWER: IS or HAS the CHECK ENGINE light on the dash ever illuminated while driving the vehicle ?.

Which solenoid did you replace the "A" or "B" solenoid.  You most likely replaced the "A" solenoid. Did you see and breakage of the solenoid ?. Did you manually slide the 1-2 shift valve back and forth to make sure it was not stuck ?.

Whenever you have to replace one of the solenoids it is a good practice to ALWAYS replace the "A" and "B" solenoids and the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid (TCC) and to ALWAYS manually move the valve back and forth to be SURE that it is not stuck in the bore.

QUESTION: Yes the check engine only comes on when the car is running if the key is just in the on position with the engine off the light wont come on. I heard thats not good. And ill be sure to replace those other two solenoids, but i have a question, what valve do you mean and where is it located and how can i tell if its stuck in the bore. Oh and im not sure witch one i replaced. It was the one closer to the front of the car if that helps.

Answer
To access the codes:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Do NOT start the engine.

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and FAN UP(^) buttons INWARD on the CLIMATE CONTROL PANEL for 3 seconds and then release them.

3. The CODES will appear on the FUEL DATA DISPLAY and after each code displays you will either see the word History or Current displayed.

4. Write down the codes and also which code is History and which code is Current as they display.

5. The display will stop at PCM?.

6. Push and release the AUTO button on the CLIMATE CONTROL PANEL.

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

As to the solenoid, You replaced the "A" solenoid. When you remove the solenoids use a thin plastic or metal rod and push the valve inward and it should come back by itself.
