the car stalls when put into any gear. the car has 145,00 miles on it, the battery is dead but is on a charger. will start on its own, but only a couple times before it dies....

Your symptom could be anything, but I will take a stab at it because you are saying you need to charge the battery and it will only start a couple times before dead.

Sounds like one or two issues. Either a bad battery or the alternator is not charging. The battery should be OK because it does accept a charge.

If charging, you will hear a scream coming from the engine. The battery voltage should be around 14.2 volts. Anything less, it is undercharging or not charging at all. You can run the engine at idle. Turn on all accessories--wipers, heater blower radio, lights. If the engine runs rough and stalls, its time to look at the alternator.
