Cadillac Repair: oil and tranny noise, head bolts, transmission noise

Question
I bought a 1996 sedan devill and it overheated and I had to replace the motor, they told me they found a motor with 60,000 miles on it and it was expensive but I thought taht was the way to go. After it was replaced I noticed the tranny was making a grinding noise when it hit 3rd gear, it wasnt real bad at first but has gotten to the point where I hear it more often as I am driving and it now also ticks as I am crusing until I let off of the gas, so I would like to know if there is a way to tell if the tranny is the original, is there a stamp or a number somewhere that I can look for? also the motor used a quart of oil the first 350 miles and I dont think this is normal, he told me the motor had been sitting a while and had to reseat the rings but it will get better. It is getting close to the warrenty running out so I need to figure these things out. Thank you

Answer
Replacing the motor with a used one was NOT a good choice as all the engines in and around 1996 have a very very 95% failure rate due to the engines head bolts coming loose and severly damaging the engine which will most likely happen to yours at any time.

As far as the transmission noise I would need to hear it.

As to the oil usage, It IS possible that the oil usage will decrease but standard oil usage of this engine is 1 quart per 1000 miles.

You can identify the transmission to see if it is the original one that came with the vehicle when it was new by checking the last 4 numbers of the transmission serial number as it should match the last 4 numbers of your VIN# of the vehicle.
