Cadillac Repair: a/c not working, r 12 freon, cadillac eldorado

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I have a 1992 cadillac eldorado.  While driving, hot air comes out of the a/c vents.  This happens when the a/c is off.  It's uncomfortable especially on a hot day.  When I push "Auto" and push the up arrow button to high after about a minute cold air does come out, but not cold enough.  I took my car to the mechanic to get serviced and he wasn't able to vacuum all the fluids out.  He added freon, but had to guess how much it needed.  He suggested replacing the whole retrofitted system.  What do you think could be the problem?  Please help, the weather is starting to get unbearably hot.

ANSWER: Did you retro-fit the system to R-134a ?.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The system was retro-fitted to R-134a in 2004.

ANSWER: The problem is either there is to mUCH freon in the system and or it may need a new orifice tube.

I need to know what the HIGH and LOW side pressures are at when the AC is running.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: What do you mean by the HIGH and LOW side pressures? When the AC is off and the hot air is released through the vents, the outside temperature reads somewhere around 80 degrees.  The adjusted temperature I keep at the coldest which is 60 degrees hoping it keeps the air that suddenly comes out the vents tolerable.

Answer
Retro-fitted AC systems usually run about 10 degrees warmer than the R-12 system due to the difference in calibration of the LOW pressure sensor of which you can do absolutly NOTHING about except go back to the r-12 freon.

The hot air is being caused in most cases by an improperly adjusted damper door at the AC programmer.

What you will need is numerous pictures and instructions on how to adjust it properly.
