Cadillac Repair: check engine light, gm code, cadillac service

Question
How do i extract the obd codes from my 1994 cadi sedan deville and erase the light.

Answer
Hello,

Getting the light out is not much of a problem, however you are being told something in the emmissions system has a problem, which could affect mileage and in certain instances can cause damage to other components in the system.

Under your steering column and at the bottom part of the dash, you will see a black connector with numerous holes (pins). The code reader will plug in there.

Go to your local parts store and ask for a GM code reader. These things are pretty cheap these days. Inside the package should be a description of what the codes mean. Just an example would be a code for a bad O2 sensor. You would change the sensor, clear the code and the engine should run properly.

The error codes are general symptoms and can mean many things. If you just try to get the light off, this is only a very temporary fix and it will come right back on until you fix what is setting the light off.

In the event that your code reader does not determine the specific problem, you will need to check your local library for a 1994 Cadillac service manual. If not available there, see if you can buy one on Ebay or google "Helm."

Good Luck!
