Cadillac Repair: Pulley, tensioner pulley, air conditioning compressor

Question
I just purchased an 87 Sedan Deville from the original owner with 108K on it. It has a "chirping/squeaking sound, especially wheh you at accelarate. I was told it might be a pulley, and looks like it might be the one to the right of the tensioner pulley at the top of the system. I'm trying to identify exactly what pulley that might be, I took the belt off and that pulley seems to move fine, but occasionally you'll hear what sounds like a screw loose in it.

Answer
Hello,

Unfortunately, without seeing the vehicle this general question is impossible to accurately answer. I will throw out some guesses, but that is all I can do for you.

If you think it is around the pulleys, could be a belt, could be a bad bearing in the tensioner. Could be the power steering pully, the air conditioning compressor, the alternator bearings.

You can try a process of elimination. You did not state if you had a serpentine belt or 3- 4 different belts.

My Allante 4.1 has a serp and my Eldo has 3 belts on its 4.1.

If you have seperate belts, you can remove one by one to see if the problem is isolated.

It will be much more difficult to isolate if you have a serp, because everything runs off the belt.

Keep your head and hands away from the engine while it is running and try to put a long screwdriver in the area you think the noise ids coming from. Put the handle of the screwdriver to you ear. Remember, sound does travel, but you might get the area the noise is coming from.

With the engine off, remove the tensioner and look at it real good. I have seen them fall apart and it may be bad.

If you have seperate belts, you can spray W-D 40 on a belt and see if the noise goes away. If so you have a bad belt.

I am sorry I cannot be more specific, but as you realize a chirping or squealing sound might sound different to me if I was at the vehicle.
