ANSWER: Cadillac has had numerous problems with ground circuits. Add a large gage wire ground from the engine to the firewall first.

Next I need to know if your problem is if you are not getting fuel to the engine OR spark to the spark plugs.

Please establish which one you do not have when this fault occurs.

QUESTION: When this fault occurred I jumpered out the starter,  the motor would start and then die.  It would run for about 2 seconds.  Each time I would turn the key off and turn the key back on, jumper the starter under the hood and again it would run for about 2 seconds and then die.  When all this was going on the vehicle had no dash lights,  everything else on the car would work, such as windows, stereo, headlights.  What I have done now after receiving your reply is I ran a large gage ground wire from the motor to the firewall.  The dash lights up and says monitoring systems then it goes into monitored systems okay and then blacks out and blinks on and off 3 to 4 times. This happened before ground wire was installed and has happened twice after I installed the ground wire.  I have started the car on and off and everything seems okay but in the past when this has done this it will go days after an incident before happening again.  any other suggestions.

ANSWER: This appears to be a fault in either the:

computer

central power supply

instrument cluster.

Are you getting any CODES when you access them via the climate control panel ?.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you so much for all your advice and answering my questions in a timely manner.  I have another question.  How do I access the codes through the climate control panel?  I can not find anything in the Chilton book on this.

Answer
1. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Do NOT start the engine.

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and WARMER ^ Buttons on the climate control panel for 3 seconds and release them.

3. Codes will appear in the form of LETTERS & NUMBERS such as E043 and right after the E043 you will see either the word History or Current.

I need to know what codes you get and which codes are History or Current.

The display will stop at .7.0  Turn ignition switch OFF.
