Cadillac Repair: 1981 cadillac eldorado 6 liter, cadillac eldorado, pressure gage

Question
My eldorado is V4-6-8 disconnected so only in V-8 mode.

1.) Sometimes when I've been driving a while with multiple stops turning on and off the engine, when I try to start the engine it cranks fine but won't start. I then have to open the air filter cover and prime it with injector clener or starting fluid, then it is okay.

2) Lately it cranks and starts, but feels as if it is about to die so I have to pump the gas multiple times to keep it running, meanwhile it is running rough with some pings, then it finally smooths out and is fine.

Answer
This sounds like a weak fuel pump.

Try this:

Cycle the ignition key to the ON position and then back to the OFF position 5 times waiting for 2 seconds between each key cycle and on the sixth cycle try and start the engine and see if it starts right up. If it does, Your fault is more than likely a weal fuel pump of which you will need to put a pressure gage on the fuel line and see what the pressure is at.

You can also have someone listen in the gas tank with the gas cap removed and every time you cycle the ignition key to the ON position WITHOUT starting the engine, He should be able to hear the pump in the gas tank run for 2 seconds and then stop. Does it ?.
