Cadillac Repair: 2001 Cadillac Deville DHS Fuel Pump, deville dhs, bob funk

Question
Sir:
Sometimes but not always, when I turn the ignition key on without starting the car I will hear a loud noise that continues for 8-10 seconds and sounds to me like the fuel pump kicking on. It then stops. The car seems to start fine, but I have been experiencing intermittent stalling which I wrote to you about before. I have changed the gas filter, and installed new plugs and last night i cleaned the throttle body of the black sticky residue you told me about. I have not had enough time to see if that has taken care of the stalling, but when I heard the noise I described, I began to think that possibly the fuel pump is starting to go bad and if it is failing intermittently, could be the cause of the stalling. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Any tests I can do to verify whether the pump is okay or possibly starting to fail??
Thank you for your help,
Bob Funk

Answer
The fuel pump should ONLY runs for 2 seconds when you turn ON the ignition key.

A weak fuel pump can cause stalling but it would usually be ALL THE TIME, Not just intermittently. You would also experience performance problems while driving the vehicle.

The noise your hearing is most likely the air pump for the air suspension shocks.

Have someone listen very carefully for where the noise is coming from.
