Isuzu Repair: Isuzu Trooper - 1989 repair, isuzu trooper 1989, accelerator pedal

Question
I have an 1989 Isuzu trooper, 5 speed manual transmission, 2.6 liter 4 cyl. engine with only 37,000 miles, of which I am the original owner. This summer it has stopped on me in traffic like someone killed the switch. I could restart it by pumping the accelerator after it sat for a few minutes. Also, last night I drove nine miles with it lurching, and cutting in and out. It died at every intersection, wouldn't idle, but started up. I could only get 45 mph on freeway. I could keep it going by pumping the accelerator pedal. When I got it home burning smell and smoke came from the back of the vehicle. I have had it in to a dealer twice already. They have replaced fuel pump and wiring harness, cleaned injectors and adjusted valves. The problem is that the problem only occurs at odd times and the dealership cannot duplicate it. I need help before I take it back in. Any suggestions?

Answer
It sounds to me like a sending unit or a wiring problem. But the burning smell has me thinking that is not it. it could be a number of things, and if I don't have it in front of me I really can't say. It does definitely sound like a fuel problem, but it has to be something in the wiring, a sensor or something of that nature.
As usual though, the dealer can't find it. leave it with them and see what happens, make the mechanic get in with you and drive it till it does it. if it is under warranty, demand that it be fixed and be an #$%%$#hole about it.
sorry I can't help you further, Derek
