Cadillac Repair: 1971 Cadillac eldorado, starter wireing

Question
i recently learned i needed to replace the starter on my 71 eldorado, and so took the old one off. didnt write down any of the wiring placements, and was wondering if you had a schematic or knew where to get one, or just knew in general which wire goes where.

Answer
Hi Jules,

Whenever I am doing something for the first few times I will always group my parts together or mark things so I know I can get them back together. That said a library will have a selection of shop manuals and hopefully they would have the one you need. With general repair information autozone.com has a repair manual section. Unfortunately when I went there the wireing wasn't very clear where it went. So from memory this is what I would do. The wires/cable with the big eyelet goes to the top post on the solinoid. The R terminal usually gets the purple wire. To verify this use a 12 volt test light or voltmeter and the wire that gets voltage with the key in the start position goes to the small R terminal and that will allow the starter to operate when the key is turned. If you have a second wire with a small terminal it should go to the I or ignition terminal.

Thats the best I can do because I don't have a manual that goes that far back at home. Bill
