Cadillac Repair: 1987 Eldorado D.I.C, air vent, center cluster

Question
I have the common problem with driver information center/cluster... It was working like normal, but at times all the components would go blank with a black screen and then reappear moments later. All the buttons were still functional but no display. At the last incident I turned on the car, lights came on like normal after a coupple of seconds the dash and D.I.C computers began to flicker, blink, go on and off and DIED. At then end of that a foul smell started to arrise through the center air vent above the D.I.C it smelled like burnt plastic or acid like smell a second later I saw smoke coming out from the same vent and underneath the passenger dashboard. The car was on till i saw the smoke, then I turned it off. Anything will help ill be willing to disassemble the whole dash. Thanks Kev

Answer
Daniel,
Hate to say it but it's not uncommon to have a cluster failure on that generation car. I remember going through 3 on my '89 Bonneville SSE in the short 35K miles I owned it (bought it new). Down-side is there's nothing you can do besides repair/replace the cluster.
