Cadillac Repair: lock cylinder and starter, individual resistance, couple choices

Question
QUESTION:  I Replaced The Key Cylinder With A Regular One (No Pass Key )
so i guess thats the problem then

i do get power to everything radio
and the only code thats read is E52
but when turned it does nothing but gives power to the dash ,Radio Ect

Answer   If you installed a Pass-Key type ignition lock cylinder, it should be reading the key you are using just fine. Are you getting a "Pass-Key Fault" signal on the dash? If so, the problem is related to the key, lock, or harness. If not, chances are the problem lies elsewhere.
In THAT case, let's look at what it IS doing:
1. Do you have ignition power to accessories like the radio etc?
2. Is the starter engaging but the engine is just not starting?

ANSWER: Sounds like you know what the problem is now. Unfortunately, now you have a new problem, how to figure out the "proper" resistance.
You have a couple choices here:
1. The resistance and cut codes are on the original vehicle invoice. I know, what's the chances of sourcing it?
2. You need to install a special tool that allows you to try the individual resistance values one at a time until you find it.
3. You can simply pick one and then install a new VATS module. The new module reads the key and burns it to memory the first time you try it.

Other than that, I think you're stuck.

QUESTION: thanks for the response,
i guess im not under standing the response ,,
are you referring to the pass key code that the key gives the computer to let it know thats the right key

if thats the case can i go to a local junk yard and grab there lock cylinder w/key
im sorry i guess im confused
and thanks again for all the help

ANSWER: Billy,
The VATS module (Pass-Key module) senses the resistance on the circuit that the key completes when in the lock cylinder. If it's within the parameters, it lets the ECM/PCM start the engine. If the resistance is NOT within the preset parameters, the ECM/PCM does not get the "go ahead" signal from the VATS module and the engine does not start. I believe you "could" take a used module and matching key from a donor car.
I hope this clears this up for you.

QUESTION: still having problems getting it started ,,,
let me run this by you ,,
the old key cylinder has to wires coming out of it that connect it to the resistance pellet on the key

what if i connect the wires to the pellet tape it up with elec tape and splice the wires to the pass key wires in the steering colume
could this work and if i do this and it doesnt work
whats the next thing i can check to get it running

Answer
Billy,
I have a better idea;
Put the key in the lock cylinder and then measure the lock cylinder and key together with the ohmmeter. If it matches what the key reads by itself, the lock cylinder/key assembly should be considered good. At that point, check the same circuit back at the VATS module. If it's the same as the lock and key assembly, then the entire circuit should be considered good and you need to figure whether that resistance is the "proper" one for the VATS module. If it is, and the module isn't sending the proper outputs to the PCM, then replace the VATS module.
