Cadillac Repair: no accelaeration, fuel pressure, fuel filter

Question
I have a 1992 4.9 liter Deville., Ran great until the other day. It will start up but it will only do a rough idol, if I accelerate the car will die. Before this happed when my car would get low on gas and I turned a corner it would stall. Any ideas here?

Answer
Michael,
Chances are good it's the fuel pump but before we condemn it, I'd want to verify the fuel filter is not clogged. Also verify the air filter is clear and the air inlet snorkel. Beyond that, it could also be the catalytic converter.
So basically, I'm going to say that situations like yours are generally either a lack of fuel getting to the engine, or a lack of air flow THROUGH the engine. If the fuel filter is clear, check the fuel pressure at the injector rail. Most likely, it will be very low (should be 40-50psi). If so, replace the in-tank pump assembly. If the fuel pressure looks good, try disconnecting the exhaust ahead of the converter and see if the engine will rev freely. If so, as long as there is no obvious restrictions in the exhaust system (crushed pipe etc) replace the converter.
