Cadillac Repair: 1980 DeVille Gas 386, throttle position sensor, little old lady

Question
QUESTION: Engine running rich, and idleing high...not racing, but idleing higher than it should...what's the adjustment needed, and how do I do it?
Usually pretty hand with cars, but not on this Caddy which I just picked up...A True Cream-Puff...Little Old Lady drove it to church, etc...Chilton's manual online is useless !
Thanks,
JohnA

ANSWER: Is or has the check engine light ever illuminated while driving it ?.

Does the gas pedal bounce back and forth right before you start it or when you shut it off ?.

QUESTION: Neither one...no check engine lite, no pedal bounce...but smells of exhaust/gas after shutting off, and while running in the garage...smells "rich"...idles higher than expected, not racing, but not idling slow either...

Answer
You most likely have a fault in the THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR and or the IDLE SPEED CONTROL MOTOR.

First try cleaning out the throttle body and the throttle plate under the air cleaner with some type of aerosol type spray cleaner and see if this helps.
