Cadillac Repair: 1994 Cadillac Concours 4.6 L NorthStar, tensioner pulley, pullies

Question
Hi there, i have a question regarding my 1994 Cadillac Concours 4.6 L NorthStar.  I have been looking through threads online to determine which pulley of mine is shot, and i think its either the tensioner pulley or the idler pulley.  The pulley in question has a smooth surface with no grooves and is either the smallest or second smallest one and is also the closest one to the front end of the car.  I think the bearing is shot.  The pulley is completely cock-eyed, but it didnt hurt the belt upon my not so thorough inspection.  Does the whole unit (pulley) have to be replaced or just the bearing?  Also, how much should this cost to fix either by myself or via the dealership?  THX, Phillip

Answer
Hi Phillip,

Both of those pullies are flat. If its the idler then just the pulley can be replaced. My thought is that it is the tensioner pulley because if the bearing were shot then there would be a terrible noise comming from the belt area. What is probably happening is the tensioner assembly were it pivots is worn allowing it to cock but not wear the belt. If I am correct then with-in 6" of the pulley you should see a 1/2" square that a breaker bar would fit in so the tensioner could be moved to remove the belt. Also when moveing the tensioner it will probably be very loose and move all over the place. As far as costs figure 1 hour labor plus parts.

Hope that answers your question. Bill
