Cadillac Repair: electrical problems, digital gages, battery cables

Question
I replaced the battery on a 92 Cadillac deville and went through the steps to reprogram the computer.None of the digital gages (speedo, fuel, etc,)light up and the AC does not work but I can hear the compressor running.

Answer
Hi Larry,

I take it everything worked before the battery was replaced. The reprogram for the computor is only to make sure the idle speed is normal. It has nothing to do with dash/gauge lights. The most important thing to do when disconnecting/connecting the battery cables is to make sure the ignition key is in the off position. The thing you could try is disconnect the battery again for 30 minuets and while the cable is disconnected turn the headlight switch on to remove whatever power is left in the computers. After 30 minuets turn the headlamp switch off, reconnect the battery and when you turn the key all the digital gauges might start to display again. If not then check the fuses. Otherwise you or your mechanic will need to do a diagnostic to see where the problem is.

Hope that helps you "see the light". Bill
