Cadillac Repair: 89 eldorado v8, starter solenoid, hi adam

Question
okay ive noticed that my car gets real hot and stays that way for some time, i check the engine data on it, and it says the coolant temp is 222 degrees usually. and when i turn off the car, then try to turn it back on, it will not start or anything. the oil and no battery charge lights come on and thats it...but the battery is fine, and its new. the oil is fine as well. there is coolant in the tank, but when i park the car, i notice that it is leaking a bit, but it only leaks after driving it. i was thinking that the starter was the problem, and was looking in to getting a new one, but decided to come here first for some help.   thank you for your time!

Answer
Hi Adam,

Your car is in the normal range. Alot of people have the misconception that it is running hot because you are used to some other older engine that doesn't need to run as hot.

As for the no start if it restarts after the engine cools off then I would say you need to replace the starter with solenoid because something inside quits working after it reaches a certain temperature. I had the same problem on a car of mine. After it heated up it didn't want to start. But after letting it cool for 30 minuets it would start again. What went bad was the starter solenoid. I replaced it and then it was fine for 6 months and then it needed to get replaced. This was on a 1969 Chevelle 396 CID with headers. The heat given off by the headers was too much for the solenoid to handle.

Without having your mechanic test the starter hot when it doesn't work to be sure I would say its time to replace the starter. Bill
