Cadillac Repair: hard to start car somtimes, ch ch ch, engine cranks

Question
QUESTION: I have a 91 sedan deville. Sometimes its hard to start the car. I have to give it gas with the ignition turned at the same time just to get it to turn over otherwise its just making a ch-ch-ch-ch-ch sound, like it not getting fuel. Could this be fuel pump going out or a dirty fuel filter? I also thought it was a dirty key but it does this way to much to be a dirty key.

ANSWER: Does the engine crank over like it should or does it have a miss while trying to crank the engine ?.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes the engine cranks over fine, does not miss. Once its started it stays Idled.

Answer
Do NOT push on the gas pedal when trying to start the engine because all you are doing is exercising your foot. Your causing more problems for the electronics to start the car.

Leave your cotton pickin foot OFF the gas pedal.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.
