Cadillac Repair: drivers window plus drivers front seat, factory shop manuals, hemmings motor news

Question
I have a 1982 coupe deville  4.1 engine -  when I raise or try to lower the
window it stops about 4 inch's from the top and makes a clicking sound.
plus a need information on the drivers seat, the motor housing fell apart I need
to know what parts I require to replace it  I took it to a garage and they removed
all the motors and cables and left the seat in a fix position, I am attempting a
complete replacement for the under seat unit.

Answer
Hi Ron,

With the clicking noise you will need to remove the drivers door panel and see if the problem is with the motor or the tape for the window regulator. I'm not sure what type regulator you have because I don't have a shop manual. If your regulator doesn't use a tape then the motor is probably bad and needs to be replaced. Make sure to install a bolt to lock the regulator from moving because once the motor is removed it will snap like a guillotine.

As for the motor housing the best thing to do would be to get a replacement completely assembled from a junkyard/auto recycler and bolt it in. Getting parts for it may be really tough as they might not be available from the dealer. If the part isn't available in your area try Hemmings Motor News which is a thick magazine that caters to older classic cars or www.junkyarddog.com and enter the info required and in 1-2 hours people from across the country will email you prices for what you need.

Getting a manual for your car might be kind of difficult also because the Chilton and others that the parts stores sell don't usually show that. You could try your local library because some have factory shop manuals. Ebay is a good source if you can wait up to 2-3 weeks. Otherwise alldata.com would be a good choice because that is one of the manual programs that professional techs use. You might need 2 manuals the B bodyshop manual and the Deville Cadillac shop manual to get both areas covered.

Hopefully that will help get the problems fixed. Let me know if you need anymore help. Bill
