Cadillac Repair: Clicks when I turn ignition., auto parts stores, battery cables

Question
I've narrowed it down to battery, alternator, or starter, but I'm not sure and could be wrong. Lights come on when doors open, headlights work. Clicks like it's trying to turn over when I turn ignition, but is very quiet.

Answer
Hi Nick,

It all starts with the battery. Remove both cables and make sure they aren't corroded. If they are then clean or replace the cables or ends as needed. If the battery is leaking acid onto the cable or is 4 or more years old replace it and see if it will start.

I'm sure you have checked the other ends of the battery cables on the starter and engine to make sure they are clean and tight.

If your car has over 100,000 miles and has the original starter then it probably needs to be replaced. Auto parts stores can test the starter if it is brought in to them. However if you have the northstar engine/4.6L then replaceing the starter should be done by your mechanic.

If you are concerned about the alternator not chargeing you could take it off if it is accessable and have the parts store test it at the same time as the starter. If it was me I would leave the alternator on the car and deal with the battery and starter first and go from there.

Let me know if you need anymore help. Bill
