Cadillac Repair: Relay, fuse size, conversion kit

Question
I have a 2000 Caddy Deville and just installed a HID conversion kit. I changed the fuses from 10 to 20A like it said, but I think I need a bigger relay with more amps. One light will stay on and the other one flashes, and sometimes they'll switch and do the same thing. What do you think the problem is?

Answer
Hi Joe,

I don't have any experriance with installing a HID kit. I am surprised that they would want to install a bigger fuse in place of a smaller one because the wire is sized by the manufacturer according to the fuse size and if undersized for the amperage used it can heat up and cause a fire. BUT maybe the kit engineers have determined that the wire size is ok.

I think you may be correct in that the relay is undersized or the contacts are damaged and that is why the lights are acting up. To test that theory and make sure that one side isn't defective I would unplug one side and leave the lights on long enough that they acted up when both were plugged in and see what happens. Then switch sides and see what happens. If both are ok by themselves but act up when plugged in at the same time then I would call the 800 help line that should be in the instruction manual and explain what is happening and see what they reccommend. Otherwise I would take the kit back and say it is defective and ask for my money back. You could try another kit by the same manufacturer or a differant one by a differant manufacturer and see what happens. Maybe that company makes junk and they all act up.

Sorry I can't be anymore help than that.
