Cadillac Repair: 85 Caddy Fleetwood dies and wont start for about 20 minutes, electric fuel pump, pickup coil

Question
Thanks! I tried that it doesn't work. Actually the car will not start at all now. It cranks but doesn't start. My mechanic also suggested chaning the ignition control module. I did that and tried using the starting fluid but it just cranks. Also I can hear the fuel pump turning on when the key is in the on position. What shall I attempt next?? Happy Holidays and thank you for your help!

-----Question-----
Hey there! I've got a problem I can't figure out. I have very limited knowledge of car repair. My uncle fixes all our cars but doesnt have time now. I drive my car (runs very quiet and smoothly) for about 20 minutes and it just dies. No noise (i've sat and watched it run til it shut off - stops as if the key is turned off) at all, it just shuts off. I can crank the engine all I want to no avail. Then I'll let it sit for a while (1/2 hour?) and it starts right up. I can drive it back home for about 10 minutes and it does the same thing again over and over. Any ideas where to start without spending a fortune? Thanks so much!     mike

See if it will try and start on starting fluid and if so, The fault is most likely the electric fuel pump in the fuel tank.

Answer
It appears that you are losing ignition to the spark plugs. If so, the most likely cause is the pickup coil within the distributor that needs to be tested when the vehicle is having the starting problem.

I can provide you with pictures and electrical tests to perform that are rather easy to perform. E-mail me at: onlineautohelp@msn.com
