Cadillac Repair: 93 Fleetwood 4.9 FWD, car wont start, vacuum pump

Question
Tom, I have a few problems. Probably got one because I didn't fix the other. My car wont start, starter engages but won't turn over. Leading to this the ac pump was out (making a screeching noise) I didn't fix the problem I just didn't use the A/C. This week the A/C pump started to smoke a little and smell like burning metal. I think it may have seized up and could this be why my car won't start? Is it possible to replace the A/C pump myself? I got a quote for $800+ and thought that was kinda steep since I don't need A/C and just want the car to start again. Hopefully you can help!!!! Thanks A Bunch,
Ryan

Answer
If you leave the A/C totally OFF by disconnecting the 2 wire electrical harness in the front of the compressor you should be able to start the engine.

however if the bearing in the A/C clutch is bad you will have the same screeching problem and the only cure is to either replace the bearing or replace the compressor (pump).

Replacing the pump requires a;

set of gages.
a vacuum pump.
A/C tools and the skills to do it correctly.
