Cadillac Repair: transmission shift problem, wireing diagram, solinoids

Question
I have a 1992 cadillac deville 4.9 litre engine with 94000 miles. My transmission will not go into first or overdrive gears. When I start it feels as if the transmission is is either 2nd, or 3rd gear, and as I reach cruising speeds it does not shift into overdrive. I believe it is in 2nd when I start because I can down shift from 3rd to second when I am moving and and feel the shift.

Answer
Hi Larry, There is a possability that your transmission could have a couple of problems. The reason it is starting out is 2nd gear could be because there is a problem with the shift solinoid A. If you get a wireing diagram you can take your ohmeter and with the electrical connector disconnected measure both solinoids. It is supposed to have between 20-50ohms depending upon what the temp. is. If it is cold then 20-30ohms and if at operating temp. it can be as high as 50ohms.

As for the TCC not engageing there are alot of differant reasons and a transmission specialist would need to go through all the checks. There is a possability that because of the mileage and how old your car is that some debris has gotten into the valvebody and making the valves stick that control 1st gear and TCC operation.

I would recommend taking your car to the Caddy dealer or trans shop and have it checked out because there really isn't a simple fix for this problem and it takes a specialist to find out whats going on. Bill
