Question -
when i try to start the car, i put the key in the ignition and turn it, but instead of it stopping to grab onto anything, it just turns freely all the way back and forth. could it be the ignition itself or the rod that is inside?

Answer -
most likely the rod inside or the switch mounted on the steering column under the dash is faulty that the rod attaches to.

Answer -
MAKE-YEAR-MODEL of car would be nice and I can see if I have any pictures I can send you.

Answer
The rod may be loose down on the steering column at the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Take down the black plastic under dash cover and using a flashlight locate the metal rod and see if it is disconnected at the
electrical portion of the ignition switch FIRST.
