what is a bcm computer and how do i go about fixing it?

i own a 90 cadillac deville. about a month ago, the dash that tells you what the milage is on the left and on the right where it tells you the temp, went out. the letter d came up and then i dont know if its the ac or the defrost that comes on. i cant turn off the fan, so i dont know if the car is overheating. the only thing i can do is unplug the battery, which seems to reset everything.  do i need to do a manual reset,or could it be an electrical problem?  there are no leaks and im not loosing any coolant. i bought a thermostat, which is getting put in tomorrow and i changed the air filter. please help?

If the display is showing a -d this would indicate a faulty BCM computer.
