Question -
My mother-in-law recently gave me her 88 Cadillac Deville. Due to sight problems, she can no longer drive. It has 61,000 miles on it. The car hadn't been driven for two years.

I had to replace a AC hose and the mechanic recharged the system with R409A saying that we should try that first and if it worked that would save from needing to convert the system from the old freon.

After about five minutes, the Service Air Conditioner light will come on and shuts down the compressor. The ground cable was disconnected to clear the computer. The on-board codes are F46 and F47. It cools fine before the warning light comes on and shuts it down. Also, the air was only blowing out of the defrost vents and the bottom.

I also know now that the system was charged with more than 2.4lbs, which is the capacity on a sticker on the frame under the hood, but I don't know exactly how much was put in. The mechanic checked the pressure and it isn't leaking.

Any advice or suggestions?

Answer -
You have to:

drain out all the freon.

evacuate the system of air via a vacuum pump.

recharge the system with the correct amount of freon.

Erase the codes by:

1. Ignition ON.

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and WARMER buttons until the whole display illiminates and then release the buttons.

3. As soon as you see the code F46 IMMEDIATELY and simultaneously push the OFF and LO buttons and hold til you see .7.0

Answer
I have never used it. So I can't tell you if it works or not.
