Steering Column Repair: Selection of Steering Column, steering gearbox, tilt column

Question
I just purchased a '36 junior Packard with no steering column, engine, transmission.  I do not intend to use original Packard parts to replace these items.  I do intend to likely go with GM parts, including an automatic either TH350 or TR400 and 327/350 engine. Looking for somewhat economical driver, not a hot rod/rat rod. Any suggestions on selecting a STEERING COLUMN brand/ model ?
Thanks,  Jc

Answer
Hi CJ:

Most any GM tilt column would be your best choice.  I would use one form a 1986-1990 Chevrolet Impala if I had my choice.  The only major differences in the GM tilt column from one model to another and from 1972 thought 1991 is the way they mount to the floor and dash.  After 1992 they are all going to have an airbag & you don;t need to deal with that.
If you have a preference for Ford, the use a column form a 1991-1996 Taurus or F150.  They bolt strictly to the dash and are much shorter and easier to install, however yo will need to create the shafts that go to your steering gearbox.

For used parts...Try this site.  You may be able to find what you need.

It's the website all the salvage yards use when they say "Hang on--let me see if my other yard has it".  Actually it's an online database of all the salvage yards in America.  You can search by part, location or price
Good Luck
